Chinese Water Deer
Ears large and rounded giving a “teddy bear” like appearance. The Chinese Water Deer Coat is a russet-brown in summer pale to grey-brown in the winter.
Second only to the Muntjac as our smallest deer in the UK. It is also the only deer that we have that does not have antlers but do have large protruding tusks in bucks. In China these deer are very difficult to find, but here in England, their population is growing every year.
All our Chinese Water Deer Stalking, is 100% Fair chase hunting, No feed stations, no fences. Usually comprising a mixture of ground deer stalking and some high seat positions. Our Chinese Water Deer Guides have many years of deer stalking experience. If you do not wish to use your own or do not have a rifle, everything can be hired on a daily rate. For my colleagues in the states, Chinese Water Deer = Saber tooth deer.
The Chinese Water have adapted extremely well to the countryside of this county. The country has large fields with small spinneys, thick hedges which not only offers plenty of food, but also plenty of cover. The Chinese Water is known to lie down in the middle of the field for a rest. We hunt the deer on a spot and stalk tactic, as these deer like to hide on the edges of the field for what can be all day!
The Norfolk broads offer great habitat for these deer, think marsh lands, large fields of grains and vegetables, making it perfect for these shy little deer.
We hunt the Chinese Water deer, both from the ground, stalking, and high seat. We spot the deer first, then determine if it is a buck or doe, then determine quality. Remember these deer have no Antlers…Just tusks!!
“An unforgettable experience, never seen anything like it in my life, deer with NO antlers, just tusks………”
